Revisiting Flamingos in the Indian River

Roger Simmons, March 25, 2025March 25, 2025

I had such fun kayaking out to see and photograph the flamboyance of American Flamingos in the Indian River earlier this month, that I decided to do it again. This time I went on my own in a new inflatable kayak I picked up for the trip.

There were more than 20 flamingos when I paddled over to Bird Island to see them at midday on Sunday. They were on a different side of the island than the last time I visited, and I was happy about that because the background added some variety to my pictures.

Even though I have only been out to see the beautiful birds twice, I can already recognize a few with unusual coloring. There are the juveniles who are turning from gray to pink, plus a few more-orange-than-pink adults, including one particular bird who has a big patch of orange on its beak. This time I also noticed another new juvenile who was a very pale shade of pink.

It’s such a privilege to be able to photography this growing group. I hope they keep making the Indian River their home.
