A surprise: Seeing Snail Kites in Lake County

Roger Simmons, December 19, 2025December 19, 2025

I’ve had so much fun over the past several months watching and photographing endangered Snail Kites in Osceola County. So I was a bit surprised to find out that there we some in Lake County, too.

There’s a pair of the kites that hang around the boat ramp at the Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area along Lake Griffin in Lake County. On a recent visit, I only got the photograph the male kite. The female was too far out for any decent photos.

I always thought Snail Kites were only found from Central Florida south to the Everglades, but looking on the e-Bird app I see there are also reported sightings of these endangered birds near Gainesville, too.

So I guess the best advice is always be looking. You never know where a Snail Kite might show up in Florida.
