Birds make a splash along Biolab Road

Roger Simmons, May 19, 2024May 19, 2024

Most times when I go birding at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, I usually find lots of birds along the Black Point Wildlife Drive. But that wasn’t the case recently – Biolab Road was the place to be.

It was during a trip earlier this month I stopped at Black Point and was pretty disappointed by the lack of birds. Afterall, the migration season has been winding down, and the water along Black Point was drying up. All I saw was a Bald Eagle and a Reddish Egret.

But when I took a drive down Biolab Road, I was pleasantly surprised by how many birds were out and about along that stretch. Biolab Road is a six-mile-long gravel road that runs along Mosquito Lagoon with a lot of different habitats. This particular day a lot of the birds I would normally see along Black Point — including Roseate Spoonbills, Green Herons and others — were camping out along Biolab Road.

I supposed birds even birds want a change of scenery sometimes.

Here’s a quick photo tour of my birding trip on Biolab Road (with a couple from Black Point, too).
