What better way to start 2026 than to spend the first afternoon and evening of the new year at the Orlando Wetlands watching the Roseate Spoonbills? That’s what I did on Jan. 1.
The birds have been settling into the rookery area of the wetlands in preparation for nesting season. More seem to be arriving by the day.
Since they are looking for mates, the birds have transitioned into their breeding plumage. Their vibrant colors are attracting the attention of not just possible avian spouses, but also photographers and birders eager to see the spoonbills.
Let’s hope it’s a happy new year for humans and Roseates, too.

With the addition of two new birds that I spotted on Sunday at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, my Birds Catalog total now is 120. The two newcomers came from high and low.
