For Green Herons, it’s easy being green

Roger Simmons, August 25, 2024August 25, 2024

Green Herons are definitely on the list of birds I love to photograph. They can be hard to find at times, but getting them in the right lighting can be special.

From a distance, the Green Heron is a dark, stocky bird hunched on slender yellow legs at the water’s edge, often hidden behind a tangle of leaves,” AllAboutBirds.org notes. “Seen up close, it is a striking bird with a velvet-green back, rich chestnut body, and a dark cap often raised into a short crest.”

While they are year-round residents in Florida, I usually only see them in summer and fall. While there haven’t been many birds to photograph at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Green Herons have been around during my recent visits.
