American Flamingos – close but not close enough

Roger Simmons, June 23, 2024June 25, 2024

I’ve made several attempts to photograph the American Flamingos who arrived late last year on Merritt Island, blown into the area from Hurricane Idalia.

They stay pretty far off the mainland in the Indian River or Mosquito Lagoon. Even with my 150-600mm lens, I can’t get the quality of pictures I want because of the distance between me and the beautiful birds.

So when I heard some flamingos were spotted in a lagoon next to the road to Playalinda Beach, I jumped in my car and drove over to Merritt Island to see if they might be closer for photographs. They were closer, but unfortunately they still pretty far away.

Someday I hope to get my flamingo closeup, but for now here are some heavily cropped, heavily edited photos of a few Merritt Island flamingos.
