Black-necked Stilt babies star at Orlando Wetlands

Roger Simmons, June 17, 2024June 17, 2024

Everyone seems to love babies, and that goes for baby birds, too.

Three Black-necked Stilt chicks are the undisputed current stars of Orlando Wetlands. It seems everyone (including me) was at the wetlands over the weekend to try to photograph the little wading birds.

They and their parents are pretty far away from the bustling boardwalk area, but that didn’t seem to deter nature photographers who wanted to get some pictures of the little ones.

I have always enjoyed photographing the long-legged Black-necked Stilts, and seeing their babies is a treat.

The parents are still being protective of the chicks, flying away from the babies to try to lure folks away. But one photographer said the parents are calming down and getting use to having people around.

A wet, splish-splashy day at Merritt Island

It was typical 2024 Florida winter weather when I visited Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, Jan. 27. It was sunny, then cloudy, then rainy, then cloudy, then sunny, etc. Rinse and repeat, as they say.
