Morning is the best time for birding, which isn’t easy for me since I am not a morning person.
But on a sunrise trip to the UCF Arboretum on June 9, I heard a familiar wake-up call. It was a Carolina Wren.
Each morning at my house, just after sunrise, there’s a very boisterous Carolina Wren who alerts the entire neighborhood that a new day has dawned.
This bird is easily the loudest in my yard, but surprisingly it’s also the smallest. From the top of its head to the end of its tail feathers, a Carolina Wren is only about 5 inches long.
What it lacks in size it makes up enthusiasm with its singing.
So, while sleepily walking along in the Arboretum I easily recognized the Carolina Wren’s call. But unlike past encounters, including those at my home, I was able to get a clear photo of this wren – who put on quite a singing performance for several minutes.
The little bird usually hangs out on the group or in the scrub, but this one was perched at eye level on a branch.
Even after this Carolina Wren was finished, I came across another not too far way – as well as some other cool birds.
Yes, it was a great day to sing about.
Like the Carolina Wren had reason to celebrate the morning – it was the start of a very good day of bird photography for me.
