Visiting Lake Marian and its birds for first time

Roger Simmons, September 8, 2025September 8, 2025

While on the lookout for Snail Kites recently in Osceola County, I headed way down south to visit Lake Marian.

Located west of Kenansville, Lake Marian is fairly remote. There’s a public boat ramp and a mobile home community on the northeastern part of the lake, but the rest of it is pretty much untouched by homes or ramps.

Perhaps because of that, it seems to be a great spot to watch birds. That included watching a Black Skimmer — a bird I have only seen on the coasts — feeding away in the lake’s waters. Eagles and Osprey flew by, too.

Alas, there were no Snail Kites there on my visit to Lake Marian, but the other birds I saw more than made up for that.

(Oh, and I did finally see Snail Kites on my drive back when I stopped by Joe Overstreet Landing!)
