It was less than a month ago that the number of American Flamingos in the Indian River flamboyance was more than 30. Now it appears that big group has broken up.
On a recent Saturday morning, the number of flamingos that was hanging around Bird Island totaled 14.
Where did the rest of them go? So far, no one is sure.
The missing flamingos might still be around but residing in other parts of the 140,000-acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Or they might have flown off to a different location.
The current group of flamingos was spotted in the Indian River back in December 2023, thought to have been blown into the area by Hurricane Idalia. The good news is that 16 months later, we still have flamingos hanging around.
Let’s hope they continue to call the area home.
