Sandhill Crane colts enter gangly phase

Roger Simmons, March 23, 2025March 22, 2025

The little Sandhill Crane colts at the Orlando Wetland aren’t so little anymore. And they’re also not quite as cute and cuddly.

The colts, now about a month old, and are going through the phase of their lives when they lose the golden down feathers they were born with and start getting their regular body and wing feathers.

They continue to grow like weeds, now standing pretty tall next to their parents. They’ll continue to hang out with mom and dad until they are about eight to ninth months old, when they will go off on their own and the parents can start working on their next generation of offspring.

It’s been great seeing these colts grow, and hopefully they’ll keep on growing!
