Eagles, hawks and more at Lake Apopka

Roger Simmons, February 27, 2025February 27, 2025

It seemed like it had been ages since I had gone to Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, so it was one of the first places I visited after returning from my cruise vacation. And it delivered a lot of great birding.

The highlight was seeing a little Eaglet in a nest on the way to LAWD. This nest has been active the past several years, and the parents must be doing something right since they successfully produced another little baby. Fortunately I was able to photograph the little one poking its head up in the nest.

Nearby a Red-tailed Hawk flew by allowing me to get some pictures of it. I saw a Red-tailed Hawk at Lake Apopka before but it was a long time ago and it was pretty far away. This one nearly flew right over me.

And there were the usual residents at Lake Apopka, and an unusual abundance of Tree Swallows. Not sure why we have so many around this year but there are a lot at Orlando Wetlands, too.
