Rewarding mid-morning visit to Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

Roger Simmons, September 20, 2024September 20, 2024

After my Saturday morning birding trip to the Ferndale Preserve in Lake County, I decided to stop by Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive on my way home.

But this visit was going to be much later than my usual early morning trips to LAWD. I wasn’t sure what I might find there at mid-morning.

As expected, I didn’t see as many birds as they are most active earlier in the day. But unexpectedly, I had a few interesting encounters, especially with some Great Blue Herons.

I came across one that caught a big bass that must have been the catch of the day, and then another that either had tried to or was thinking about trying to grab a marsh rabbit for a meal. I also finally met “Cooked Neck,” the unofficial mascot for LAWD, who is known for his oddly shaped neck. (This bird has been there for years.)

And finally, there was a pretty Little Blue Heron sitting in a bush full of pretty yellow flowers.
