Roseate Spoonbills – Having fun photographing these birds

Roger Simmons, April 7, 2024April 7, 2024

It’s always a fun time of year when the Roseate Spoonbills return to Central Florida. Well, fun for me because I get to photograph them.

And they’re all sort of different. The younger “spoonies” are light pink with more orange bills. The older, adult ones have darker pink and even yellow colors – especially during breeding season – and gray bills.

But taking pictures of these birds in different lighting – at sunrise or sunset – really shows the differences in their colors. Their pink feathers can appear purpleish in the increasing or decreasing sunlight.

They’re back here for nesting season, and I have been taking advantage of their residency to take some of my favorite photos of these birds.

Below are my latest Spoonie photos, taken on two trips to the Orlando Wetlands – at sunset on April 4 and at sunrise on April 6.
