Bald Eagle flyby at sunset – great way to end a day

Roger Simmons, February 8, 2024February 8, 2024

On most weekend mornings in January, the weather has been cloudy – not an ideal condition for bird photography.

So on Sunday, Jan. 28, I decided to flip the schedule and go to the Orland Wetlands for some close-to-sunset bird viewing, since the lighting was forecast to be better.

The light was great, but it was wind was not – there was too much and it was chasing away most birds. But near sunset, as the winds died down and I was leaving the park, a Bald Eagle flew over my head, then circled back and flew directly over me. Pretty cool!

I also spotted a Northern Harrier in flight, and a Sandhill Crane what was definitely not amused at having its picture taken.

But the Bald Eagle flyby was the highlight and a great way to end an afternoon of birding.
