Spending the evening with Hooded Mergansers

Roger Simmons, December 1, 2025December 2, 2025

There always seems to be a big difference when you photograph birds in the morning or the evening. So, I went to Oviedo to try to see the visiting Hooded Merganser ducks in a different light.

At first there were no ducks at all in the little pond — apparently some kids had been throwing rocks at the Mergansers and chased them away before I arrived. (Sigh – stupid kids!!) Fortunately for me, after a while, one of the male ducks came back. Later, a couple others joined him.

It was great photographing the ducks as the light was coming from the west, and I also changed my position to the opposite side of the pond from where I was during my recent morning visit.

I love watching and photographing these beautiful ducks — morning or evening.
