Appreciating the Red-winged blackbirds

Roger Simmons, April 9, 2025April 8, 2025

They’re very common and year-round residents in almost all of the continental U.S., but I still think Red-winged Blackbirds are pretty cool to photograph.

The males are the ones with the signature red (and yellow) wings. The females might not be as colorful, but they’re pretty too.

On trips to the Orlando Wetlands, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive or about any other place I visit, there are usually some Red-winged Blackbirds singing away. And they usually entice me into taking a couple of photos of them.

Here are a few from some recent trips.
