On Thanksgiving morning at the Orlando Wetlands, I was hoping to find a male Painted Bunting who has been hanging around. But that little bird continues to elude me, so I went to check on another colorful one I knew would be out and about: the male Vermilion Flycatcher.
This little lost bird has been at the wetlands since October. He’s become quite the attraction – no doubt due to his fearlessness around photographers and that he stays in roughly the same area all the time.
While usually found in deserts of southwest U.S. as well as Mexico and Central America, Vermilion Flycatchers do sometimes show up in odd places like Florida. A quick Google News search showed birders rejoicing recently about the birds’ presence in Idaho and in Massachusetts,
So, on Thanksgiving Day, one of the many things I was thankful for was having opportunities to photograph this fiery little visitor.
