A wetlands double-header to close out August

Roger Simmons, September 2, 2024September 2, 2024

For the last full weekend of August, I decided to spend some time at the area’s two favorite wetlands: Orlando Wetlands in Christmas and Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands in Viera.

I went to the Orlando Wetlands in first, then drove over to I-95 and went south to the wetlands in Viera. Unfortunately, I sort of felt like I struck out with my double-header.

It could have been the time of day, the weather or just the fact it was late August, but I was disappointed in how few birds I saw at each wetlands.

But a bad day of birding is still better than most non-birding days.

The small part that I did see was impressive – a great pond with lots of wading birds and a rookery for egrets and other birds. An adult and juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron flew overhead, and a pair of Roseate Spoonbills were hanging around.
