By the dawn’s early light: Morning at Orlando Wetlands

Roger Simmons, July 21, 2024July 21, 2024

There’s something special about the light in the morning when taking bird photos. There’s such a soft, golden hue that it makes the subjects of photos appear almost magical.

This was apparent to me during a recent morning visit to the Orlando Wetlands, arriving there shortly after the sun rose.

The lighting can be just right that it brings out different details in some birds — like the green feathers in a Green Heron poised atop an old tree branch (above).

But it wasn’t just the Green Heron that looked special. Take a look at these birds …

I saw my first Eastern Towhee at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge back in March, but I’ve seen many more send then at the UCF Arboretum. The scrub bush landscape there is perfect for these colorful orange and black birds.
