Visiting Newton Park in Winter Garden

Roger Simmons, July 8, 2024July 21, 2024

I’ve seen some great birding pictures from photographers at Newton Park in Winter Garden, so I finally decided to check it out.

Named after A.B. Newton, Winter Garden’s first mayor, the park sits on the north shore of Lake Apopka next to (I kid you not) Trailer City.

This park next to a trailer park has some new elements but also some old ones, such as the concrete block bridges that cross over former man-made ponds that would dump excess runoff into Lake Apopka.

With some nice fishing areas and lots of vegetation, Newton Park seems to be a draw for birds flying over or hanging around Lake Apopka. I happened to be there when many of the very large lily pads were flowering.

Even though I saw a number of birds during my midday visit, I suspect Newton Park is an even greater birding location early in the morning or late in the evening.

This is a Wilson’s Warbler, a colorful little bird that isn’t supposed to be in Florida. In fact, it regularly visits just about everywhere in the U.S., Canada and Central America but not Florida.

Perhaps it’s because I went to UCF and am partial to black and gold, but the Yellow-throated Warbler is one of my favorite little birds. So you can imagine how surprised and happy I was this week when a Yellow-throated Warbler visited my backyard for the first time in about…
