Great Egret chicks at Orlando Wetlands

Roger Simmons, May 10, 2024May 10, 2024

It’s baby bird time, and that includes a group of Great Egret chicks I saw recently at the Orlando Wetlands.

Great Egrets are beautiful white birds, and their regal, elegant look was no doubt part of the reason the National Audubon Society chose them as its symbol in 1953. But Great Egret babies – well, they have a look only a mother could love. They actually appear a little prehistoric.

Near sunset one day, I spotted one nest at the wetlands that included three chicks. There was also a parent, who appeared to be overwhelmed by the very active triplets.
