Spending an evening with Sandhill Crane families

Roger Simmons, April 3, 2024April 3, 2024

On a recent sunset trip to the Orlando Wetlands, I came across not just one, but two families of Sandhill Cranes.

The first group was a mom, a dad and a young two-week old colt. They were foraging in some tall grass about 20 feet off one of the wetlands’ trails.

This newer colt doesn’t seem to be generating the buzz and attention that has been thrust upon a pair of older colts, which might be why this family was a little shy.

They were still fun to watch with the parents catching and then sharing food with the little colt to eat.

About 5 minutes after leaving that family, I came across the other, more famous Sandhill Crane family – the one everyone seems to have been following and photographing the past month.

So, it was a bit of a treat that it was just me and the four family members, who cut in front of me and decided to walk along a trail I was on. This group includes a pair of month-old colts, who have grown quickly.

While I got some nice photos of the family from the back, I really wanted to get ahead of them. They finally moved off the trail enough to allow me to pass them, get in front of them and take some nice photos.

Overall, it was a great Family Day at the wetlands.
