Photo story: Savannah Sparrows play king of the post

Roger Simmons, March 7, 2024March 7, 2024

During a very foggy Saturday morning visit to Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, the sun broke out long enough for me to spot a little flock of Savannah Sparrows.

They are cute little birds with streaks of yellow in the coloring above their eyes. And they were congregated near an old fence post that seemed to be a prime place to land.

I watched as one sparrow staked out the post as its turf, while others would circle around or bravely try to land — only to be chased away.

I captured one such challenge in this series of photos.
