Five new birds added to my catalog this week

Roger Simmons, October 24, 2023October 24, 2023

It’s a great time for birding with fall migration in full swing, and over the last week I’ve been able to add some new birds to my lifetime list.

The official Roger’s Bird Catalog now stands at 137 different types of birds I have photographed – all since my January 1 visit to the Orlando Wetlands.

The photos of a couple of the list’s newcomers aren’t great – but they still count in my book. (Hopefully I will be able to replace them with better photos.)

The new birds are a Harrier, Hermit Thrush, Crested Caracara, House Wren and Red-tailed Hawk. Also, one of the new birds is one that I originally overlooked from March but only noticed this week while reviewing some old pictures.

A Harrier flies over the Orlando Wetlands in March 2023. I originally missed this bird when I uploaded my photos back in March, but I came across it this week.
A Hermit Thrush basks in post-sunrise light at Mead Gardens in Winter Park in October 2023.
A Crested Caracara takes flight over the Orlando Wetlands in the early morning light in October 2023.
A House Wren looks over the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive in October 2023. House Wrens can be found across the Western Hemisphere.
A Red-tailed Hawk soars over the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive in October 2023. Yeah, this is a rotten photo, but it’s a photo of a new bird nonetheless.
