Belted Kingfishers on a Freaky Friday

Roger Simmons, August 18, 2023August 19, 2023

It’s rare for me to be off on a Friday, and today turned into a Freaky (in a good way) Friday with some Belted Kingfishers.

Going to Orlando Wetlands to photograph birds is always one of my top choices, but on Friday my reason for going was less about choice and more about necessity. During my last trip I accidently lost a lens hood. Fortunately, someone turned it into the lost and found, so I needed to go reclaim my property.

I also wanted to claim some redemption when it came to photographing Belted Kingfishers. Yes, this colorful but shy little bird was still on my mind. While I think my photographs of Kingfishers at the wetlands have improved over time, I still wasn’t satisfied and wanted another chance with the birds.

So, after picking up my lens hood, I went in search of the Kingfishers. I quickly found at least three hanging around near the boardwalk just after sunup. As the sun continued to rise, so did my spirits while I photographed the birds. I think these are the best I have shot of the Belted Kingfishers so far. It wasn’t how I expected this Friday to play out, but I am not complaining.

Eastern Towhee: Don’t look up for this bird

I saw my first Eastern Towhee at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge back in March, but I’ve seen many more send then at the UCF Arboretum. The scrub bush landscape there is perfect for these colorful orange and black birds.
