One of my favorites: Red-winged Blackbird

Roger Simmons, May 23, 2023February 4, 2025

Here’s the first of a new series of posts focusing on one particular bird and some of the photos I’ve taken of it.

We’ll start with the Red-winged Blackbird, which really is one of my favorite birds to photograph.

When I see a male Red-winged Blackbird, with his colorful red, yellow and black wings, it’s hard not to stop and take a few pictures. The females are equally intriguing with their brown and white patterns.

And, I love to hear them call to one another whenever I am hiking around wetlands, forests or even my neighborhood.

So, here are some of my favorite Red-winged Blackbird photos:

One of my first bird photos and a favorite. I love the black, red, yellow and green colors in this picture, as well as the bird’s attitude. Taken in February 2023 at Orlando Wetlands Park.
