Time to visit the Little Bird Dept.

Roger Simmons, May 7, 2023August 11, 2023

The bigger the bird, the easier to photograph, right? I mean, how can you miss a 4-foot Sandhill Crane or a Big Blue Heron? But when it comes to little birds, ones measured in inches instead of feet, photographing them is a little more difficult – at least for me.

So, for the past several outdoor outings I’ve been trying to find and photograph little birds. Yes, it has been difficult — little birds are harder to get in focus when they are in trees or bushes, and little birds like to move around. A lot. I mean, really, a lot.

But at Orlando Wetlands Park, the UCF Arboretum and Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive the past few days, I’ve been able to document some of the little birds that flit around the area. Here’s to the little guys …

A Common Yellowthroat warbler dances in the brush along the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive in May 2023.
The Palm Warbler is a common warbler in Florida. This one was photographed on the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.
The 5-inch Carolina Wren is tough to spot but easy to ID. The bird may be small but it has the LOUDEST song.
The male Pine Warbler was hanging around the UCF Arboretum near sunset.
A female Pine Warbler – seen near sunset at the UCF Arboretum.
This House Sparrow is 6-inches and was introduced from Europe to Central Park in NYC in the 1850s. This one was seen, in of all places, on the roof of a Dunkin Donuts near my home.
