Orlando TV news anchors in the news

Roger Simmons, April 5, 2012

Some updates for you on some former Orlando TV newsers who are making news …

Mike Garofalo, who left Local 6 back in September 2010 to be closer to his reporter wife in Miami, has landed back on the anchor desk. TVSpy.com reports that he joined  WOAI-NBC 4 in San Antonio as morning anchor.  Garofalo arrived at WKMG in December 2008 from KOAT-ABC 7 in Albuquerque. He’s likely best remembered here as the man who replaced longtime popular anchor Bob Frier on Channel 6’s anchor desk. …

Popular former WFTV anchor Chris Egert, who left Channel 9 in 2007 to head to Cox sister station KIRO-CBS 7 in Seattle, is heading to Minneapolis. NewsBlues.com reports that Egert is making the move to care for his ailing father. On Thursday, Egert posted on his Facebook page that his last day as morning anchor at KIRO is Friday, and that he’ll start at  KSTP-ABC 5 in Minneapolis on April 26. …

If you were watching the cable or national networks’ coverage of this week’s Texas tornadoes, you might have spotted a couple of former Orlando newsers. Former WKMG morning meteorologist Larry Mowry was doing storm coverage on KTVT-CBS 11 in Dallas — the same station where former WFTV reporter Jason Allen was filing reports for the CBS Evening News. And though I didn’t see him, former WFTV met Pete Delkus is the chief met at Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA-8. …

Former WFTV anchor Robert Maxwell has left KTVX-ABC 4 in Utah and has become morning anchor at KXAN-NBC 36 in Austin, Texas, TVSpy.com reports. …

I’m not even sure how I found this … Do you remember former WESH 2 anchor and reporter John McIntire? Wonder what he’s been up to? Well, while I haven’t been blogging, he has. He has an interesting take on today’s topics at WTF with John McIntire. He describes his current role as “Comedian/TV-Radio Talk Host/Local PBS analyst/Alt. Weekly Columnist/All Around Groovy Guy.” Check it out. …

And finally, former Daily Buzz co-host Clayton Morris has established his place in broadcast history. Earlier this week, America celebrated “National Hug and Anchor Day,” an event started by Morris on Fox & Friends in 2009. Check out the clip below to see how this heart-warming national holiday began.

WKMG’s new schedule goes into effect today. No more news at 4, 5 or 5:30 p.m. — the new hourlong 6 p.m. show starts, followed by the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric at 7 p.m. Taking over one of Local 6 News’ former time slots — from 5 to…

Hurricane Charley: Orlando stations remember anniversary with special, Red Cross telethon

August 10, 2009

Thursday will mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Charley’s surprising and destructive visit to Orlando. Orlando’s TV stations performed a great public service on Aug. 13, 2004 — dismissing the official National Hurricane Center track for the storm and correctly predicting the hurricane was headed to Orlando, not to Tampa….
