Our annual football preview is our largest project of the year. It requires planning and coordination not only with editorial, but with advertising and marketing. The key to any special section is making it “special” — and I do that by coming up with a theme and carrying it out across all the pages with typography, photos, graphics and text. After becoming sports editor in early August, I had just a few days to put together concepts for the preview. I settled on “Glory Days” — since the best days for many of Florida’s football teams were in the past. Working with my editors, writers and designers, we carried out the theme across all five sections of the preview. The Associated Press Sports Editors named the preview Top 10 in the Nation (their highest award for sections).
