Just when the mania over the Sandhill Cane colts had finally subsided at the Orlando Wetlands, there are two new colts to capture all the attention.
It’s the same thing that happened last year at the wetlands: One crane couple produced two little colts, and weeks later another couple came along with another colt. This year, however, it’s almost a true sequel since the second couple is also roaming the park with two little baby cranes.
I came across the newest Sandhill Crane family by accident on a recent Sunday visit. There were only about three people, myself included, who saw them and started taking pictures. The number of photographers grew quickly. I didn’t stay around too long.
One of these newer colts seems much more white than its sibling. It may have been the lighting that day or perhaps this colt is a bit leucistic, a condition that causes a loss of pigmentation in some animals. That would make it a rare bird indeed.
