Since I had a few days off between Christmas and the start of the new year, I decided to take some longer birding trips. That included two 80-mile treks south to watch Ospreys go fishing at Sebastian Inlet State Park.
A friend told me about this spectacle at the inlet, located at the Brevard and Indian River county line. Ospreys circle over the inlet hunting for fish, then they come racing down with talons extended to splash into the ocean and hopefully emerge with a catch. It’s a scene repeated over and over again. Sometimes the birds are successful and sometimes they come up empty – sort of like humans fishing I guess.
I actually visited the inlet twice over the holiday break to watch this scene unfold. Neither time was ideal since the direction of the wind had the Ospreys’ backs to me most of the time they dove into the water.
The pictures may not be great but it certainly was fun watching these osprey fish.
