Discovering Prairie Warblers, other birds at Hal Scott Preserve

Roger Simmons, September 17, 2023September 17, 2023

I visited Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park several years ago while preparing for a 10-day hike in New Mexico. The preserve’s flat scrub area provided miles of trails that helped with training for my hike.

But on Saturday, I decided to visit the Hal Scott area again, this time looking for endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers. I didn’t find any, but did come across some other cool birds.

They included warblers – Prairie, Common Yellowthroat and Pine – plus White-eyed Vireos (which I heard, but wasn’t able to see) and a Red-eyed Vireo (which I saw and got a poor photograph of because the sun was directly behind it).

I’ll be back there again to keep looking for those woodpeckers.
