Summer birding season isn’t so slow after all

Roger Simmons, June 27, 2025June 27, 2025

I am always hearing that summer is the slow time for birding in Florida, but I don’t seem to have problems finding birds to photograph – especially at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.

Yes, most of the migratory birds have left but there is still an entertaining cast of native birds that can be seen, especially in some of the diverse areas of MINWR like Black Point Wildlife Drive, Biolab Road, Scrub Ridge Trail and Pine Flatwoods Trail.

Because many of these birds are here year-round, they often take a backseat to the visitors who are around for only a short time or part of the year.

Here’s a sample from earlier this month.

Juvenile White Ibis, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Black-necked Stilt, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Eastern Towhee, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Northern Flicker, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Great Crested Flycatcher, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Red-winged Blackbird, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, June 2025.
Barn Swallow, St. Johns River on Brevard-Orange line, June 2025. Photographed this one coming home from MINWR.

It’s the middle of August and not when you would expect to see some baby birds. But I spotted one poking its head out from a large cedar shrub.

One of my favorites: Red-winged Blackbird

When I see a male Red-winged Blackbird, with his colorful red, yellow and black wings, it’s hard not to stop and take a few pictures. The females are equally intriguing.
