Screech Owl mania at Merritt Island

Roger Simmons, May 12, 2025May 12, 2025

I’ve been making some trips to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge looking for the Eastern Screech Owls, and I’m not the only one.

I feel as if the little owls have their own paparazzi, with small groups of photographers standing around dead palms, hoping an owl sticks its head out of one of the hollowed-out holes.

That was the case last Saturday morning as I joined a couple of other birders hoping to get a glimpse of a little screech owl. It did finally stick it’s head out to see the world – probably wondering “why are all these people looking at me?”

I think this might be a baby owl, since I spotted a red-morph adult in this same tree and hole a few days earlier.

I tried to be respectful of the bird and not stay too long, but I was able to get some shots of this cute little owl.

There have been flamingos in the Indian River before, but it is pretty rare. I got up very early on a Saturday morning to try to get some pictures of them.
