Tricolored Herons, others in St. Augustine

Roger Simmons, May 10, 2025May 9, 2025

Rounding out the birds I saw at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm rookery back in mid-April are some birds that, I’m sorry to say, I don’t always stop to photograph.

Tricolored Herons, Snowy Egrets and Eurasian Collared Doves can be found just about everywhere in Florida, and there were plenty of them at the rookery. But I have never seen tricolors nesting before, and that was a real treat.

The wind whipped the feathers of the snowies in photogenic shapes. And there was some nice lighting for the doves, too.

I hope to make another trip to the rookery soon, and who knows what I might end up photographing.
