Double dose of Great Horned Owl owlets

Roger Simmons, February 28, 2024February 28, 2024

It may not be spring on our calendars, but spring has already sprung for some creatures in the wild.

For example, I offer two sets of Great Horned Owl owlets I came across last week, about 100 miles apart.

The first set was in Pinellas County, where they are so popular that officials have circled their nesting area with caution tape to keep photographers and other admirers from getting too close.

The other set I found — quite by accident — was in Osceola County as the sun was setting. While there were two owlets in the nest here, one was active while the other was apparently sleeping. But, as a bonus, mom joined them in nest.

I got what I think is one of the cutest birds photos I have taken with the little owlet cuddling up with its mom at sunset. (At the top of this page.)

The two pairs of owlets may be among the first bird babies I have spotted this season, but they won’t be the last.

This is a Wilson’s Warbler, a colorful little bird that isn’t supposed to be in Florida. In fact, it regularly visits just about everywhere in the U.S., Canada and Central America but not Florida.

Yards in front of my car, a Peregrine Falcon swooped down and grabbed a Common Gallinule, taking the bird to the top of a power pole for breakfast.
