Casey Anthony verdict: How Orlando TV covered it

After three years of constant surprises, the Casey Anthony saga saved its biggest one for last: a stunning not guilty verdict. Orlando TV stations have been covering the trial wall-to-wall — even bumping regular programming again today to talk while the jury deliberations were ongoing.

Hours after the verdict, the Orlando stations continued their coverage. WKMG bumped the CBS Evening News to stay in Casey mode, and continued with coverage at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. WESH broke for NBC Nightly News, but returned with hourlong specials at 7 and 8 p.m., too. WFTV did air ABC World News, but then followed with its own hourlong Casey Anthony special. Only WOFL-Fox 35 — which has seen surprisingly high ratings for its marathon coverage — went back to regular programming after its 5-6:30 p.m. news. Of course, it has 90 minutes of news later tonight to continue coverage.

Below is how  Orlando’s main TV news channels broadcast the verdict in the most watched trial in Central Florida history:

Happy birthdays to Channel 6, WUCF-TV

Today is a historic day for Orlando TV for two important reasons, with something old and something new.

First, it was on this day 57 years ago that television began in Orlando. WDBO-Channel 6 started broadcasting, airing shows from CBS, NBC, ABC and DuMont. It would be the area’s only TV station for two years until WESH-2 began in Daytona Beach.

Adding to the importance of July 1 in Orlando TV history, the area’s new home for PBS  – WUCF-TV — begins broadcasting today on channel 68. It replaces WMFE-Channel 24, whose new owner will flip it to a religious format shortly.

“These organizations have done an outstanding job coming together to ensure that everyone in central Florida can continue enjoying their favorite PBS content, on television and online,” PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger said in a news release Thursday. “WUCF will offer a full range of PBS content as well as one-of-a-kind local programming that allows everyone to discover more, to experience more and to be more. I am confident that this new collaboration will provide even greater service to the people of Central Florida.”

QUICK NOTE: Also found out that July 1 is also the anniversary of the launch of commercial television in the U.S. Friday was the anniversary of the first broadcast on New York City’s WNBT (now known as WNBC). TVNewser.com has more info.

WKMG takes Casey Anthony special to prime time

Mark NeJame, Tony Pipitone and Lauren Rowe anchor WKMG's prime-time Casey Anthony special report.

It’s not enough that Orlando’s main TV stations have thrown out their networks morning and afternoon schedules to show the Casey Anthony trial. On Thursday night, WKMG bumped part of CBS’ prime-time lineup for a trial recap.

Local 6′s Casey Anthony Special Report aired at 10 p.m., in the slot where a repeat of “The Mentalist” was scheduled to run. I suspect when ratings come out, Local 6′s bold move will prove to be a ratings winner. It was the most dramatic day of the trial with Cindy Anthony testifying that she was responsible for chloroform searches on the family computer and that stains in the trunk of Casey’s car were there when the family bought the vehicle.

Casey Anthony trial: A tour of media village

The Casey Anthony trial has brought unprecedented media attention to Orlando — as well a horde of reporters and satellite trucks now camped outside the Orange County Courthouse. Here’s a quick tour of this temporary media village, which some have dubbed “Casey Town.”

This is the main media village area, directly across Orange Avenue from the Orange County Courthouse. This is where the broadcast and cable networks are positioned, as well as Orlando stations WKMG-Local 6 and WOFL-Fox 35.

This is the south "suburb" of Casey Town, located south of the courthouse and home to WFTV-Channel 9, WESH-Channel 2 and WDBO-AM radio.

This is the northern boundary of Casey Town -- one of the Orlando Sentinel's parking lots. Univision secured space here, with a view of the courthouse parking garage as a background.
