Video obtained by WOFL-Fox 35 of an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy arresting a 17-year-old has prompted the agency to review the arrest and the officer’s actions.
According to Fox 35, the incident in the video occurred last week when part of an Apopka neighborhood was closed off by the police during an bomb scare. The video shows the deputy and the young man exchanging words, then the deputy wrestling the suspect to the ground.
What’s the station the CW Network wishes all of its affiliates would be like? Well, just turn on Orlando’s WKCF-CW 18 and find out.
The station announced Thursday that it received the APEX Award from The CW for being the network’s “Model Affiliate of the Year.”
According to the press release, “The Model Affiliate is the highest award given by the CW Television Network for being an overall outstanding local TV station. The award is based on the quality and involvement of all aspects of television operations such as CW18 marketing and station branding, on and off air promotional efforts, sales and advertiser ventures, duopoly integration with sister station WESH 2 and local media partnerships.”
This happened a little more than a week ago, but I still wanted to mention it.
If there is an underrated reporter in Central Florida, I think ‘s WESH’s Michelle Meredith. The woman seems like a bulldog when she gets a story.
You may remember, it was Meredith with her little video cam that caught former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich vacationing at Disney World while awaiting word on his indictment by a grand jury. This was after nearly every reporter in town was looking for him across the Disney resort.
Last week, Meredith — again with her video camera — was able to grab a quick chat with Vice President Joe Biden. It came in Philadelphia, where Meredith’s daughter was competing in a crew competition that also included the veep’s granddaughter. And Biden looked just as happy as Blago to see Meredith and her camera.
Did she break news with Biden? No, but it did give us some insight into how he spends his weekends. And honestly, if you are at an event with the vice president, aren’t you going to try to get an interview?
The folks at WESH 2 received a house call from America’s favorite doctor last week.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the syndicated Dr. Oz show, was at WESH on Thursday. While visiting the station, he talked about his show, his book and met with some local folks. He even took time to pose for photos in the newsroom and with WESH 2 News anchor Jim Payne and Martha Sugalski.
Hearst’s Orlando duopoly double-pumps Dr. Oz each week day, at 9 a.m. on CW 18 and at 3 p.m. on WESH.
It’s been nearly five years since former Local 6 anchor Mark McEwen’s life took an unexpected turn. Flying back to Orlando from an out-of-town trip, and after being diagnosed with what a doctor thought was stomach flu, McEwen stuffered a debilitating stroke.
“What I’ve been through, I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” McEwen told WKMG.
McEwen returned recently to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, where he was treated and began his long road to recovery. “This place saved my life, and I’ll never forget that,” he said.
