Blast from the Past: 1960 Channel 9 logo

It’s amazing what you can stumble upon on the web. And I’m not even sure how I ended up finding this — but here’s a 1960 logo for Orlando’s WLOF-Channel 9, now known as WFTV.

The station had only been on the air about 2-1/2 years when this logo appeared in the November 4, 1960, edition of the Daytona Beach Sunday News-Journal.  The newspaper has some of its past editions on Google, and included in this particular one was a WLOF advertisement promoting ABC’s Friday night lineup: “Harrigan & Son,” “The Flintstones,” Robert Taylor in “The Detectives” and “The Law and Mr. Jones.” (Even note the old ABC logo within the WLOF branding.)

Casey shuffle continues: WESH moves Wimbledon to CW18

If you want to spend mornings or afternoons watching NBC’s Wimbledon coverage next week, don’t bother tuning to WESH 2.

The local peacock affiliate plans to stick with its non-stop Casey Anthony trial coverage and will move the tennis matches from the All-England club to sister station WKCF-CW 18.

According to a WESH news release, “Wimbledon updates during late-night programming will remain on WESH-TV, which will delay NBC’s overnight programming during the week.”

Only the men’s final on Sunday, July 3, is scheduled to air on WESH 2 — that is, of course, unless Judge Belvin Perry decides to hold a Sunday session in the Casey Anthony trial.

Former Daily Buzz host headed to Fox 35

A familiar face is returning to your morning TV screen.

John Brown, formerly co-host of the Orlando-based The Daily Buzz, will come back to Central Florida to anchor Fox 35′s Good Day morning news show.

STLToday.com reports that Brown signed off Wednesday from his current four-year gig at KTVI-Fox 2 in St. Louis. He also hosted a radio show there.

“I’m thrilled to be coming back to Orlando, a city my family absolutely loves,” Brown said in a news release. “I look forward to connecting with FOX 35 viewers and giving them the information they need to start their day. This job truly is a dream come true.”

Brown left The Daily Buzz in 2006.

WKMG takes Casey Anthony special to prime time

Mark NeJame, Tony Pipitone and Lauren Rowe anchor WKMG's prime-time Casey Anthony special report.

It’s not enough that Orlando’s main TV stations have thrown out their networks morning and afternoon schedules to show the Casey Anthony trial. On Thursday night, WKMG bumped part of CBS’ prime-time lineup for a trial recap.

Local 6′s Casey Anthony Special Report aired at 10 p.m., in the slot where a repeat of “The Mentalist” was scheduled to run. I suspect when ratings come out, Local 6′s bold move will prove to be a ratings winner. It was the most dramatic day of the trial with Cindy Anthony testifying that she was responsible for chloroform searches on the family computer and that stains in the trunk of Casey’s car were there when the family bought the vehicle.

Say goodnight, Bob. Opsahl exits 11 p.m. news

Some Orlando TV quick takes for you…

Did you catch Bob Opsahl anchoring the 11 p.m. edition of Eyewitness News on WFTV-Channel 9 last week? If so, that may be the last time you see Bob at 11 in awhile. Orlando Sentinel TV Guy Hal Boedeker broke the news about Opsahl being moved off the 11 o’clock shift, making way for anchor heir-apparent Josh Benson. But, did you know that this isn’t the first time Opsahl was moved off the 11 p.m. news? It wasn’t his choice then, but in the 1986, WFTV bumped him off the 11 p.m. (and 6 p.m.) shows for anchor Bud Hedinger. Once Bud left the station, Opsahl reclaimed the main anchor chair in 1989 and hasn’t given it up since … until now, on his terms. …

Good thing for upcoming WUCF TV, the future home of PBS in Orlando. After losing WMFE-24 as a home for PBS programming, the region’s other choice fro PBS, WDSC-15 in Daytona Beach, is dropping the public broadcasting network on July 1. The reason? Financial woes. Read it all here.

Former WOFL-Fox 35 meteorologist Sabrina Fein has landed out West. She’s the newest addition to the weather team at San Diego’s XETV-CW 6. She’s forecasting on the station’s 10 and 11 p.m. shows.
